3 DAYS FROM MARRAKECH TO MERZOUGA IN THE SAHARA DESERT

Day 1: Marrakech to the Dades Valley.

Probably the most evocative destination in the whole of Morocco, Marrakech engages all of your senses with vigour and without relent.

The old walled city, the Medina, is, without doubt, the main attraction for most visitors with its thick red walls, vibrantly colourful and frenzied marketplaces and streams of people flowing through its narrow streets. There are literally thousands of stalls to explore, full of spice pyramids, hand-woven rugs and an unending supply of other foods, crafts and artefacts.

Of course, the city also offers the most modern of shopping experiences outside of the old walls in the Guéliz and Hivernage districts, not to mention cultural attractions like the Palais des Congrès and the Théâtre Royal.

Marrakech literally has everything to offer, so allow yourself some time in this incredible city, because with so much to see and do you’ll want to reserve some time to relax in a Riad (boutique hotel) of your choice, including a traditional hammer spa treatment!

From Marrakech, you will start your adventure by driving over the highest mountain pass in Morocco, the Tichka Pass in the High Atlas mountains, with exhilarating panoramic views and cool mountain air to refresh you after the stifling heat and energy of the city.

Then, onwards to Ait Benhaddou, a fortified Ksar (Berber castle) full of enchanting Kasbahs. Finally, you’ll end an exciting first day by relaxing overnight at a Riad in the Dades Valley.

Day 2: Dades Valley and Toudra Gorges to Merzouga.

The Dades Valley is the perfect way to experience a true Moroccan oasis, formed by the Dades river which flows down from the High Atlas Mountains providing life to the lush-green vegetation that grows along the length of the valley, surrounded by the otherwise dry and rocky landscape on either side. the multicoloured valley walls which rise from the valley floor as high as 500 metres in some places make for a spectacular backdrop. From here there are many short walks and treks that visitors can enjoy without having to scale treacherous mountain passes.

The Toudra Gorges is not far away with incredible stone walls that gradually close in around the road, after passing through lush palm groves and traditional Berber villages.

Day 2 of your adventure with depart from your riad in the Dades Valley, visiting the Toudra Gorges and finally to the small desert village of Merzouga, where you will have the chance to experience the magic of the desert sand dunes by none other than a ride on the back of a camel!

The night will be spent in a fully-equipped tent camp in the middle of the sand dunes, with drum music and a warming campfire. You’ll also have the chance to take the most amazing sunset pictures as it sets over the dunes.

Day 3: Merzouga to Ouarzazate to Marrakech

Your desert experience will end in much the same magical way as it began – watching the sun rise over the dunes, followed by a desert camp breakfast and a camel ride back to the village of Merzouga! From here you will start your journey back towards Marrakech, but not before stopping in the ancient city of Ouarzazate, also known as the gateway to the Sahara Desert. The views from, here are truly stunning, with the rugged terrain and a 19th-century palace as a backdrop which has been featured in several high-profile movies, posing as Tibet, ancient Rome, Somalia, and Egypt. When you see it for yourself, you’ll understand why!
